Educational Opportunities

Abstudy

Abstudy is available for children to travel to secondary school in Nhulunbuy, Darwin and other Australian regional centres but it doesn’t apply in the critical infant years where literacy and numeracy teaching is needed. We want to give young children, with a family member, the ability to travel to develop their skills and to develop their English and numeracy skills so that they can make a successful transition to high school and beyond.

Travel & Accommodation

There are many opportunities for elders and Aboriginal men and women to teach traditional knowledge outside Arnhem land including weaving, painting, dance and song. Batumbil, Doris and Daisy Burarrwanga, Mitchel Gawaitja, Terrence Gurruwiwi and Djalu Gurruwiwi are in demand but the costs of travel and accommodation to travel from remote regions are prohibitive. We raise support for travel and accommodation to enable cross-cultural educational opportunities involving Mata Mata community members.
